3. While many cancers in animal hosts (chicken, cats dogs) are caused by retroviruses, this is not the case for humans. Explain the reason for this difference. *Please type answer
To clarify, it is not asking why humans can't be effected by animal retroviruses. Thanks!
Answer -
Retroviruses are termed as RNA viruses that reverse-transcribe RNA into DNA. They are associated with different cancers in chickens, dog, cats, and monkeys.
Retroviruses also require specific membrane protein to bind to the host cell. The animal retrovirus is doesn't bind to the human host cell as the specific membrane protein is absent. Retroviruses cause cancer by a mutation in the oncogene leads to the growth of the tumour. The reason for retroviral cancer in an animal is due to the difference in genetic makeup or DNA of animals and humans. Humans have an advance mutation repair mechanism than animals. Also, retroviral cancer in an animal is more due to the immunity, the immune mechanism of human activity as the defensive mechanism against the retrovirus.
Due to the above reasons, many cancer in the animal host is caused by a retrovirus that is not observed in human.
