Answer #1

Lane C: PCR without template DNA

Lane N: negative control having template DNA from conventional non-GM-soy in A and non-GM-maize in B.

Lane 1 to 5: PCR with specific template DNA

For a successful PCR study, the length of amplicon is very crucial. In this study the primers have been designed to amplify short fragments of genomic DNA where we can see specific compact bands of different size. Detection of smaller fragments indicates that the extracted DNA is of good quality for amplification in the subsequent PCR.

The absence of amplicon in the lane C indicates that there is no source of contamination from the environment, buffers or reagents used.

Amplicons are not present on non-GM-soy and non-GM-maize suggesting that the primers are specific to modified DNA only, means the needed gene is not present in non-GM crop.
