You need to construct a strain of C. elegant that is homozygous for the Dpy and Unc mutations. Unc and Dpy are unliked, autosomal genes, and both mutations are recessive. You're provided with one plate of stock heramphrodite worms that are homozygous for Dpy, a second plate of stock hermaphrodite worms that are homozygous for Unc, and a third plate with male worms that are homozygous wild type. The first step is to cross the wild type males with either an Unc or Dpy hermaphrodite. Show the result of this cross, and then the crosses required to achieve homozygous worms with both Dpy and Unc mutations.

Solution :

From the above given data we know that we have provided a one plate of stock heramphrodite worms that are homozygous for Dpy, a second plate of stock hermaphrodite worms that are homozygous for Unc, and a third plate with male worms that are homozygous wild type.here wildtype homozygous male is DDUU and a recessive homozygous mutation with dduu alleles. Now by conducting the 3 crosses we get the following

Cross 1 :

DDUU x ddUU

F1 : DdUU

Cross 2 :

DdUU x DDuu

F1 : DdUu and DDUu

Cross 3 : DdUu x DdUu

DU dU Du du
DU DDUU DdUU DDUu DdUu
dU DdUU ddUU DdUu ddUu
Du DDUu DdUu DDuu Dduu
du DdUu ddUu Dduu dduu

You are interested in mouse eye development and conduct a genetic screen for mutations that result in strong eye defects. After treating a male mouse with ENU (a chemical mutagen that induces base-pair changes and small deletions), you identify four mouse mutants 1-4, each with defective eyes. You cross each of the four mutant mice with eye defects to homozygous wild type mice and examine the progeny from each cross. What type of information can you get from observing the...

A wild-type male mates with a hermaphrodite that is both unusually long (lon) and has uncoordinated (unc) movement. All of the F, male offspring are long but with normal movement, while all of the F, hermaphrodite offspring are normal in both body length and movement. a. What can you determine about the linkage or chromosomal locations of the lon and the unc genes? among the cross-progeny in the F, generation, and in what proportions? expected in the F, generation, and...

In Drosophila, the autosomal recessive brown eye color mutation (b) displays interactions with both the X-linked recessive vermilion mutation (v) and the autosomal recessive scarlet (s) mutation. Flies homozygous for brown and simultaneously hemizygous or homozygous for vermilion have white eyes. Flies simultaneously homozygous for both the brown and scarlet mutations also have white eyes. Flies that are wildtype at all 3 loci have wildtype eye color. Flies that are homozygous or hemizygous for the recessive mutant at only one...

    46. (7 points) Vanessa has obtained two true-breeding strains of mice, each homozygous for an independently discovered recessive mutation that prevents the formation of hair on the body. One of the mutant strains is called naked, and the other mutation strain is called hairless. To determine whether the two mutations are simply alleles for the same gene, Vanessa crosses naked and hairless mice with each other (cross 1). All the offspring are phenotypically wild- type. In Drosophila, the X-linked recessive mutation vermilion (XV) causes bright red eyes, in contrast to the brick-red eyes of wild type (X+). Part A separate autosomal recessive mutation (br), causes the eyes to be brown. Predict the F1 results of the following cross: normal females x white males. (Assume that the parents are homozygous.) Flies carrying both mutations lose all pigmentation and are white-eyed. Label the diagram by dragging the labels to the appropriate targets. Note: not all labels will...

Required information Fruit flies normally have red eyes. Seven different true-breeding strains of fly with white eyes have been identified (A-G). In each strain, the white eye trait is due to an autosomal recessive allele. It is possible all seven strains have mutations in the same gene. Alternatively, they may have mutations in different genes. To determine how many genes are involved in eye color in these flies, pair-wise crosses are performed between each strain. The offspring phenotypes resulting from...
