Obligate Anaerobes grow in complete absence or very little concentration of oxygen (depending upon the oxygen tolerance of individual species). Oxygen produces free radicals (reactive oxygen species) such as superoxides and peroxides that are harmful for the cells which in case of aerobes are detoxified by enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalase.

Obligate anaerobes produce these enzymes in very less quantities and presence of oxygen poisons the obligative anaerobes leading to their death.

Log phase of microbial growth is characterized by the increase in number of cells following the lag phase where cells prepare themselves to divide.

There will be no logarithmic growth line for obligate anaerobes in the presence of oxygen. The cells will undergo the phase of decline.
