Hi! I am stuck on this question and already attempted it once and it said two of the four blanks was right but I am not sure which ones it was. (for reference I had genes, complementary, transcripts, and hybridization)

Question:

How have microarrays demonstrated that, although all cells of an organism have the same genome, some genes are expressed in almost all cells , whereas other genes show cell and tissue specific expression?

fill in the blanks:

microarrays identify which _____ are present in which cells by hybridization to different ______ probes contained in multiple _____. Different _____ patterns indicate that whereas some genes are expressed in almost all cells others show cell and tissue specific expression.

the options to fill in are: hybridization, spots, transcripts, random, genes, complementary

Answer #1

The answer should be : transcripts, complementary, genes and hybridization.

Microarrays identify which transcripts are present in which cells by hybridization to different complementary probes contained in multiple genes. Different hybridization patterns indicate that whereas some genes are expressed in almost all cells others show cell and tissue specific expression.

Reason : Microarrays are basically used for identification of transcripts, because same genome can produce different transcripts. Transcripts are the ones which are actually expressed differently in different cells. The probes will always be complementary to the sequence of interest, so that binding can take place. The different hybridization patterns will actually indicate the expression levels of genes in different cells.

Tissue-specific microarray analysis facilitates the comparison of gene expression in different tissues. In order to prepare a sample for microarray analysis, messenger RNA (mRNA) is extracted from a particular tissue, reverse transcribed to generate complementary DNA (cDNA), and labeled with a fluorescent probe. The microarray below shows comparison of gene expression in stomach and intestinal tissues. The cDNA from stomach tissue was labeled with red fluorescent probes, whereas the cDNA from the intestinal tissue was labeled with green fluorescent probes....

    20. A corn plant is homozygous for a mutant allele that results in no pigment in the seed (i.e., white). The mutant is caused by Ds insertion that often exits late in seed development, when there is an active Ac element in the genome. If there is NO active Ac element, the seeds of this plant will be: A) no pigment (i.e., white) B) pigmented all over C) white with small spots of pigment D) white with large spots of...
