Answer #1

Seliwanoff's Test for carbohydrates mostly done to differentiate between aldoses and ketoses.

SAMPLE PREDICTION OBSERVATION KETOSE(Y/N)
Distilled water This does not contain any sugar molecules that might appropriately show positive or negative result Peach/no change No
Glucose This is technically an aldose hence it may develop red coloration but not instantly Peach to red slowly No
Fructose This is a ketose sugar which might provide a chance for it to show positive result Deep red solution very quickly Yes
Sucrose It is a disaccharide made of an aldose(glucose) and a ketose(fructose). Hence the red coloration will occur because of the presence of fructose as seliwanoff reagent will react quickly with it Deep red solution quickly Yes
Lactose Disaccharide made of glucose and galactose, both being aldose hence the test might be negative Peach to red slowly No
Starch It is a poolysaccharide made of glucose molecules, hence reaction will be very slow and negative result might occur Peach to red very slowly No
Mystery sample Peach to red slowly No

If you accidentally forgot to inoculate your organism in an OF-glucose tube with oil, and only had one yellow “no oil” tube, what type of carbohydrate catabolism would describe that organism (fermenter, oxidative, neither)? Explain your answer. q. What are two other results from the OF-glucose tubes other than their type of carbohydrate catabolism? r. How can organisms that don't use starch grow on a starch agar plate? Only three of the 18 metal ions form a precipitate with this reagent: silver ion (Ag'), mercury(I)ion (Hg). and lead ion (Pb). Since lead chloride is somewhat soluble, it is not completely precipitated here, and a low concentration of...

PREPARATION OF PHARMACEUTICALS - Fischer Esterification Reactions Q: Calculate the expected mass of both methyl salicylate and aspirin assuming 100% yield. EXPERIMENT7 PREPARATION OF PHARMACEUTICALS Fischer Esterification Reactions Almost 2500 years ago, physicians such as Hippocrates recommended that patients chew on the bark of the willow to alleviate pain. The active ingredient in willow bark was found to be salicin, a compound made of a molecule of salicyl alcohol bonded to a p-D-glucose molecule. In the stomach, the bond between...

    10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
