The experiment tells us about the osmosis.
In case of isotonic solution, there is not found change in the weight of potato cubes. Because water potential is same in both potato cubes and the isotonic solution.
In case of distilled water( hypotonic solution), there is found increase in weight of the potato cubes. Because water potential of distilled water is higher than potati cubes. That's why water flow from distilled water to potato cubes via osmosis.
In case of 2.5% saline (hypertonic solution), the weight of potato cubes is decreased. Because the water potential of hypertonic solution is lower than potato cubes. That's why water will flow from potato cubes to the hypertonic solution and it leads to decrease in weight of potato cubes.

1. Describe the changes in your potato sample when placed in distilled water. Based on these changes, was the water hypertonic, isotonic, or hypotonic compared to the cells of the potato? Explain your reasoning in terms of the flow of water into or out of the potato cells. 2, Describe the changes in your potato sample when placed in 0.9% NaCl solution. Based on these changes, was the 0.9% NaCl hypertonic, isotonic, or hypotonic compared to the cells of the...
If a potato core is allowed to dehydrate by sitting in open air, would the water potential of the potato cells decrease or increase? i think it decreases but i'm not sure. and if a plant cell has a lower water potential than its surroundings and if pressure=0, is the cell hypertonic(in terms of solute concentration) or hypotonic to its environment? will the cell gain or lose water? any ideas...?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_potentialanalysis queswhat is water potential?Osmosis Lab /27819 Name: ________________________________ Date: ___________...
