Answer #1

Porphyrins are complex chemical compounds that are large heterocyclic organic ring structures. The complex ring structures of porphyrins are comprises of 4 customized pyrroles (5-membered organic ring) subunits linked by methine (carbon with one double bond and two single bonds: =CH-) bridges. The naturally occurring porphyrins of biological significance are the hemes. Hemes in biological systems consist of ferrous iron (Fe2+) complexed with four nitrogens of the specific porphyrin molecule identified as protoporphyrin IX. The major function of heme in humans is its role in the coordination of O2 molecules in hemoglobin. There are 3 structurally different types of hemes in humans recognized as heme a,b, and c. Further adding to the heme b of hemoglobin and its function in the transport of oxygen, hemes are significant for the biological functions of several enzymes such as the cytochromes of oxidative phosphorylation and the xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes of the cytochrome P450 family (CYP).

Cytochrome C is referred to as a cytochrome for its heme group structure. Cytochrome C contains an iron atom surrounded by a porphyrin ring. The oxidation and reduction of the iron atom permit the cytochrome to transmit individual electrons from one complex to another complex in the ETC.

In plants photosynthesis, The head portion of a chlorophyll molecule is a ring-like structure called a porphyrin ring. The chlorophyll (chloroplast) porphyrin ring consists of a magnesium atom at its middle or center. This center part of a chlorophyll molecule absorbs light energy. This energy is used for the procedure of photosynthesis.

For the process of photosynthesis, the water provides an electron in photosystem II to the chlorophyll and also it produces oxygen and reduces the NADP to NADPH by liberating H+ ion.
