A patient has a tumor that secretes excess CRH (corticotropin-releasing hormone). The tumor is not located in the normal CRH-secreting structure and does not respond to the normal positive or negative stimuli for CRH. Will the following levels be normal, low or high?

a. Plasma cortisol

b. Plasma ACTH

c. CRH secretion by the hypothalamus (only consider the CRH secreted from the normal location, not the tumor-associated secretion for this question)

d. Plasma glucose

Plasma cortisol will be high beacuse ectopically released CRH will act on adrenal gland to produce cortisol in excess amount.

Plasma ACTH and CRH secretion by hypothalamus will be low , beacuse excess cortisol will negatively regulate ACTH and CRH secretion.

Plasma glucose will be lower beacuse excess cortisol will cause excess metabolism of glucose.
