Phospholipids biolayer of the cell membrane has two portions1. The exposed hydrophilic portion (either to the outside environment or to inside cytosol). Based the backbone of the phospholipids there are mainly 2 kinds such as 1. Glycerophospholipids 2. Sphingolipids and in which the basic structure of these lipids are similar to having either a Glycerol or Sphingosine as the foundation moiety. Whereas in the case of head groups (lipids head groups are substitute that attached to foundation moiety), Glycerophospholpids carrying alcohol as the head group molecule and Shingolipids carrying either Choline or mono/oligosaccharides as the head groups molecule exposed to the surface. The vast diversity of head groups enable the cell membrane to recognize and bind with a diverse group of ligands approached to cell and thus it allows the possibility of carrying a wide range of functions such as cell signalling substrate transport etc. More specifically, in the case of Glycerophopholipids, the common head groups are in the alcohol category and are ethanolamine, Choline, Serine, etc. and where these head groups containing Glycerophospholipids carry out diverse functions such as 1. Ethanolamine and Choline act as chaperons thus mediating membrane-mediated cell signalling, 2. Serine is involved in apoptosis. In the case of Sphingolipids, the common head groups is in the Glycerol/Sphingosine category are Phosphocoline, Glucose etc. The functions of Phosphocoline containing Sphingolipids are involved in cell signalling pathways. Hence it is concluded that for carrying our diverse functions different head groups are attached to phospholipids backbone.

Lo 8: Properties of the Plasma Membrane 1) Draw the structure of a phospholipid and label the three parts: Glycerol backbone, fatty acid tails and phosphate head group. Label which regions are hydrophobic and which are hydrophilic. Be able to explain WHY they have the property they do (think of their chemical make up-look it up if you need a reminder). 2) Describe two properties that affect membrane fluidity? Draw a representation of how each property affects membrane fluidity. Explain...

TranslationOverview:The purpose of this activity is to help the students to understand how replication, transcription, and translation are connected. Students will use a sequence from a bacterial gene that confers resistance to antibiotics (carbapenems). They will be asked to apply the knowledge obtained in the class lecture to (1) find the promoter in the sequence, (2) determine the amino acid sequence of a fragment of the polypeptide, (3) "reverse translate" a fragment of the polypeptide, and (4) identify mutations in...

please type and answer all the question Why Isn’t My Antibiotic Working? Part I Your throat hurts, and it’s been hurting for the last 24 hours, getting progressively worse. You’re worried because you were just visiting your cousin last weekend, and his 4-year-old daughter was just diagnosed with strep throat. You know it’s pretty contagious, and your cousin called as soon as his daughter was diagnosed. “Ugh,” you think. You don’t want to go to the doctor; it takes time,...

The Mantoux Test The summer orientation for freshmen nursing students at Ohio Northern University gave Elena a chance to meet her academic advisor, register for fall semester classes, and mingle with her future classmates. At the concluding session, Elena was given a form with instructions to have her family physician verify the results of her Mantoux test and return the document when school started. As Elena was wondering what a Mantoux test was, La'Davia, the student next to her, leaned...

There are many different ways in which firms can organize themselves: There are flat organizations and there are tall organizations. There are organizations structured by products, divisions, and geography. But one thing nearly all structures have in common is a chain of command, or hierarchy. Do companies have to set up that way? Tony Hsieh doesn’t think so. Hsieh is the CEO of Zappos, the online seller of shoes. Hsieh is a guy who thinks outside of the box. When...

Two principles of nonverbal communication that will be discussed are nonverbal messages are crucial for expressing emotions and nonverbal messages help manage impressions. Recently I used the principle, nonverbal messages are crucial for expressing emotions. This form of communication was used during a class presentation, where I wanted to give my undivided attention to presented information to me I gave them eye contact, nodded in agreement, and smiled. My purpose for using such emotions was to show that I was...
