The gram-negative aerobic bacteria are the main factor in the growth of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (most notably Klebsiella pneumonia and Escherichia coli), but Staphylococcus aureus and other gram-positive bacteria are being believed as rising agents causing this inflammation.

The normal appearance of a peritoneal fluid sample is generally clear or straw-colored. Abnormal appearances may give evidence to circumstances or diseases present and may comprise. Yellow color with liver disease, greenish from bile and milky from obstruction of the lymphatic system.
