what are some Lifestyle Issues about the public in modern day?

Another public health issue that I believe can be associated with low socio economic status is childhood obesity. At least in the United States, the areas of our country that typically trend towards a low socioeconomic status are more urban areas. Because these urban areas are overrun mainly by housing and other buildings, there is a distinct lack of social green space. A longitudinal study conducted in Southern California followed a group of children from twelve distinct communities for a period of eight years. Researchers were attempting to observe the relationship between proximity to parks and recreational resources and childhood obesity risk. Using BMI as an indicator, researchers were able to illustrate the effect where you live can have on childhood obesity. They noted that “for park acres within a 500m distance of children’s homes, there were significant inverse associations with attained BMI at age 18 […] Recreation programs within a 10km buffer of children’s homes were significantly and inversely associated with achieved levels in BMI at age 18” (Wolch et al). Based on this study, researchers were able to conclude that “children with better access to parks and recreational resources are less likely to experience significant increases in attained BMI” (Wolch et al).

This research is significant in showing that where you live can have a direct effect on your health. As families living with a low socioeconomic status may not have the freedom to choose to live in an area close to a park, their children may be adversely affected by increasing the risk that they may develop obesity. While they may want to make healthy choices and avoid obesity, their risk may be higher due to no fault of their own simply because of the zip code they can afford.

Here we set those articles into broad context. The literature generally supported taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs): SSB taxes reduced purchase and consumption of those items across socioeconomic strata. In addition, some researchers suggest that SSB taxes as part of a more comprehensive approach may amplify the positive effects on obesity reduction and other health-related morbidities (Cobiac, Tam, Veerman, and Blakely, 2017). For example, an SSB tax combined with sugar, salt, alcohol, and tobacco taxes combined with subsidies for purchasing...
