Question

@,0 ,0 ,0 at 25°C. The membrane potential of the neuron is -60 mV. Assuming the neuronal cell membrane has channels that allow facilitated diffusion of Cl, do you expect Cl to flow into the cell? Explain your answer and provide quantitative support for your answer (i.e. show calculations). 10. A neuron with an intracellular Ch concentration of 30 mM is placed in a solution that contains 120 mM CI

Answer #1

10) Facilitated diffusion is a type of passive transport wherein the transporter proteins or uniporters mediates the transport of ions from the region of high concentration to the region of low concentration (down the conc. gradient) until equilibrium is achieved.

Inner Cl- concentration is 30mM while outer is 120mM, therefore Cl- will move inside from outside till both sides reach 75mM concentration i.e. equilibrium (120+30=150; 150/2=75).

11) Rate of transport in case of passive diffusion reduces or decreases with respect to time, therefore A and B follows passive transport; WHILE rate of transport in case of active transport remains constant with respect to time, therefore C follow active transport.

In case of passive transport, facilitated diffusion is saturable or gets stable, therefore B follows facilitated diffusion; WHILE simple diffusion follows linear path, i.e. A

So, A = simple diffusion; B = facilitated diffusion; C = active transport

    9. Voltage clamps are normally used to “clamp” or “freeze” membrane potential at a particular value and then measure the resulting ionic currents. Explain how setting a voltage clamp at the presynaptic terminal to a very positive potential can prevent synaptic transmission (hint: synaptic transmission is triggered using voltage-gated Ca++ channels, and you can assume typical Ca concentrations inside and outside the cell from the table. Please explain how setting a voltage clamp at the presynaptic terminal to a very...
