Answer #1

The answer is D- The sites of the histone modifications occur on the Amino-terminal part of the histone proteins because these regions are extended away from the nucleosome and therefore the modifications can be recognized by the proteins that might alter chromatin

Each histone protein which makes the nucleosome core contain a flexible N terminal (amino terminal of 11-37 residues). This amino-terminal extends from the fixed structure of the nucleosome. Histone modifications like acetylation, methylation, phosphorylation occur on the amino acids of amino-terminal and this modification recognized by a protein that alters chromatin and impact gene expression.

Part 1. Eukaryotes use at least two distinct mechanisms to control gene expression by altering the structure of chromatin around a particular gene. One of these mechanisms is the covalent modification of histones to switch DNA between an open and closed confirmation. A second mechanism is the covalent modification of DNA (typically on cytosines) by methylation. A. Nucleosome positioning along the DNA can influence where transcriptional regulatory proteins are able to bind DNA. If a nucleosome is bound to an enhancer sequence, it may outcompete a regulatory protein from binding the same sequence. Conversely, if an enhancer sequence is in the linker DNA where the nucleosome is absent, the regulatory protein does not have to compete with the nucleosome. The position of the nucleosome can alter the accessibility of a sequence of DNA to DNA binding proteins....
