How does GMO cause global warming. Please explain and give examples Thank you
Answer:
Genetically modified organisms/foods are those whose gene profile is altered by genetic engineering techniques. The purpose of gene modification is to increase the yield of either plants or animals. Though previously it was thought that GMO’s are the solution for increasing population, the opinion is being changed due to the potential disadvantages of genetically altered foods.
Genetically modified organisms are created by inserting or deleting the required genes by gene technology and mating with the species of required characteristics. Thus, the resulting offspring will contain some gens that allow rapid growth of the plant or organism, resistant certain diseases etc.
Genetically modified crops pollute the normal crops by wind pollination, so the crops become genetically modified (cross-pollination) without the farmer’s intention. Though farmers can get high yields with less work, decreasing resistance in people is the main consequence of GMO’s. Indirectly, GMO’s already altered the food cycle; some species are now going to be extinct due to genetically modified foods (for example, herbicide tolerant plants). Global warming pollutant gas that is carbon dioxide cannot be absorbed by the plants, due to to the genetically modified nature followed by severe global warming associated with plants decreased ability to decompose the soil carbon organic matter woth CO2. For example rice crops which are genetically engineered for better or to get double yeild due to genetic modification by producing allopolyploidy varieties associated with doubling of the chromosomal number and these alterations are leading to plants reduced ability to absorb sufficient CO2 or decompose carbon matter in side the soil and in atmosphere. This is leading to more global warming.
