Cell will shrink ( Image number 1)

If a cell is put in a solution which has a solute concentration higher than its own, it will shrink, and if it is put in a solution with a lower solute concentration than its own, the cell will swell and may even burst.

More water moves out of the cell

Water enters and leaves cell at same rate

More water moves into the cell

Cell placed in hypertonic solution

Cell placed in isotonic solution

Cell placed in hypotonic solution

A red blood cell will swell and undergo hemolysis (burst) when placed in a hypotonic solution.

When placed in a hypertonic solution, a red blood cell will lose water and undergo crenation (shrink).

Animal cells tend to do best in an isotonic environment, where the flow of water in and out of the cell is occurring at equal rates.
