Why is the biomass of consumers in a community determined by the net primary production (NPP) of the autotrophs in a community. What abiotic environmental factors affect the net primary production in a community? Gives examples of some communities with high NPP and some with low NPP. Open Ocean near the equator receives abundant solar radiation and temperature is optimal for growth of primary producers (phytoplankton) yet the NPP of Open Ocean is quite low.
