An industry is proposing to construct a new coal-fired power plant that produces 2300 MW
electricity with efficiency of 39%. Coal has a heating value of 10,750 Btu/lb, and contains a
sulfur content of 2.4%. It is expected that 95% of sulfur will be converted to SO2. The New
Source Performance Standards (NSPS) limits the SO2 emission rate from any coal-fired
power plants to 1.2 lb/ 106
Btu heat input.
a) Determine coal consumption in lb/ hr
b) Determine SO2 emission rate in lb/hr
c) Determine if the newly proposed power plant is required to install a flue gas
desulfurization (FGD) process for SO2 removal from the flue gas. What percent SO2
removal is required?

Answer #1

a) total coal power = 2300 *100/39

                                 = 5897.43 MW

        Total coal energy per hour = 21230748 *106 J

=> coal consumption in lb/ hr = 21230748 *106 /11341895

                                                = 1.872 *106 lb/hr

b)    SO2 emission rate in lb/hr = 0.024 * 1.872 *106 *0.95

                                                  = 4.268 * 104 lb/hr

c)    % SO2 removal is required = 100 - (4.268 * 104 * 1.2*10-6/ 4.268 * 104) *100

                                                      =   99.988 %

A coal-fired power plant proposes to burn 3% sulfur coal with a heating value of 11,000 Btu/lb. If the plant is to meet the standard of performance given by EPA New Source Performance Standards (NSPS), what percent cleanup is required for SO2? What percent sulfur could the coal contain if the standards are to be met with no clean-up devices?

You are assigned to help an aged 30% efficient 800-MW coal-fired power plant in Indonesia. You learnt that a warning has been issued to this power plant demanding that the rate of SO2 emission from this power plan has to be reduced to no more than 0.6 kg s. You find out that every million BTU of heat supplying into this aged plant emits 0.8 lb of SO2. Since this power plant is aged, its power generation can be easily...

Consider a coal-fired steam power plant that produces 175 MW of electric power. The power plant operates on a simple ideal Rankine cycle with turbine inlet conditions of 8 MPa and 560°C and a condenser pressure of 8 kPa. The coal has a heating value (energy released when the coal is burned) of 29,300 kJ/kg and a CO2 emission value of 0.093 kg CO2/MJ.
