Answer #1

One of the most important arguments that brings out the enlightenment ideas in Tartuffe occurs in the very first act, in the fifth scene when Cleante argues his points with Orgon. Cleante clearly brings out the fact that religions and gods limited the thoughts and knowledge of human beings for a very long time and branded those who went beyond the limitations of the religions as sinners or blasphemy. Thus, he suggests that man’s thoughts and knowledge shouldn’t be limited with the concepts of heaven and hell. So, he calls for people to use reason to separate true piety from hypocrisy. Cleante suggests that only those who are liberated from the clutches of the religions would be able to use their intellectual capability completely and overcome the limitations that the religions have set on them. this would also help them engage in scientific inquiry into the many false beliefs and hypocritical preaching. He also suggests that he is not afraid of gods because gods would definitely love those who use their full human potential.
