Ionic Compound : It forms when metal reacts with non metal.

Magnesium is metal and Iodine is non metal. Mg have tendency to form Mg 2+ ion and I have tendency to form I - ion. Magnesium and Iodine reacts and forms ionic compound ( MgI 2 ).

Potassium is metal and oxygen is non metal. K have tendency to form K + ion and O have tendency to form O 2- ion. Potassium and oxygen reacts and forms ionic compound ( K2O ).

Covalent compound : It forms when two non metals react.

Oxygen and Fluorine are two non metals.

They form covalent compound OF2

Sr and K are both metals , they do not form ionic compound.
