  • Fatty acids can be divided into four general categories:

1) Saturated

2) monounsaturated

3) polyunsaturated and

4) trans fats

  • Saturated fatty acids and trans fats are associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease.
  • Monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids are associated with a decreased risk of coronary heart disease.
  • Saturated FA & Trans FA- Increased intake of SFA is associated with increased risk of CHD.
  • Monounsaturated FA - MUFA consumption may aid in chronic disease prevention.
  • Polyunsaturated FA - PUFA consumption may aid in chronic disease prevention. In particular omega-3 and 6 FA
