Question

An organic liquid is heated from 20°C to 40°C by hot water in a 1:1 pass shell-and- tube heat exchanger in counter-current flow. The inlet temperature of the water stream is 85oC and flows in the shell side. The organic liquid flows through a bundle of 200 tubes of outside diameter 21 mm with a wall thickness of 2 mm. The flows of the organic liquid and water are 40 kg s and 15 kg s1, respectively (a) Calculate the outlet temperature of water stream and estimate the tube length. [12 marks] (b) After maintenance, the inlet and outlet pipes of the water stream are found to be connected wrongly and the heat exchanger operates in co-current flow Assume the overal heat transfer coefficient is unaffected. Determine the new outlet temperatures of the organic and water streams, and the new heat duty [8 marks] Properties of the organic liquid (stream 1) Cp1 2100 J kg K1 n11 x 103 kg m s P1 800 kg m3 A1-0.25 W m1 K1 Properties of water (stream 2) p2 4179 J kg K1 P2 1000 kg m3 Thermal property of steel: -45 W m1 K Shell side film heat transfer coefficient 7000 W mr2 K1 Fouling coefficient of the organic liquid 5500 W m2 K-1 The outside tube surface may be assumed clean

(LMTD method) A 2 shell, 4 tube pass heat exchanger is being used to heat 40 kg/s of a process fluid in the tubes from an inlet temperature of 15°C to a target temperature of 70°C using condensing steam at 150°C. The overall heat transfer coefficient for a clean heat exchanger was Uo=1500W/m2.°C, however, the design engineer neglected to take into account fouling of the heat exchanger. After 5 years of use, fouling has occurred with fouling factors of 0.0005m2.°C/W...
