The Rhodophyta algae Porphyra is known to colonize aquatic environments deeper than the Chlorophyta algae Spirogyra; why is this and what advantages does Porphyra have by claiming this niche?

Spirogyra ( Chlorophyta) and Porphyra ( rhodophyta) vary in occupancy of niche in ocean whereas spirogyra occupies surface, the porphyra occupies deeper oceans.

For the surface àlgae sufficient light is presence for photosynthesis to occur. The red yellow wavelengths are utilized by surface algae for photosynthesis. These wavelengths cannot reach deeper oceans. But blue light can reach deeper oceans which can be easily absorbed by porphyra to carry photosynthesis.

So variation in niche allows to use sunlight resource differentially.
