Question

Geomechanics

A 50-storey concrete building was constructed on a normally consolidated clay layer, which has a layer thickness of 5 m. The building foundation increased the vertical effective stress at midpoint of the clay layer from 70 kPa to 220 kPa (final increase). The coefficient of volume of compressibility (mv) of the clay in this stress range was determined to be 5×10-4 kPa-1 . What would be the long-term settlement of the building foundation due to the primary consolidation of the clay layer?

A new foundation will be built on a 2.5m thick clay layer. The current effective stress in the middle of the clay layer was found to be 200 kPa. During construction, the foundation area will be heavily loaded with the structure and equipment so that effective stress at the middle of the clay layer will be increased to 800 kPa. After construction is completed, which will take 5 years, the equipment will be removed and the final effective stress in...
