Significance of theory in counseling practice.
Some psychologists are of the opinion that theory provides a stable and good foundation for effective counselling.
1) Theory helps counselors to understand and describe their client's issues (thoughts, feelings behaviours).
2) They may also use theory to decide what they will do in during the counseling sessions.
3) They may also use it to selectively prove their findings and conclusion of the clients problems.
4) It helps counselors to pay attention to that information which is relevant and also guides them on what to exactly look for.
Very often counselors use an eclectic approach to treatment. This means using different therapies to address the different concerns of the client. For this, the counsellor must have sound knowledge of different theories and select parts of it that the he/she finds relevant to the client.
Counselors who use only one theory to guide their practice are considered as having theoretical purity. This may limit their ability to help.
