Skills-based model of romantic competence :

A healthy romantic relationship is based on 3 skill domains. Romantic competence is necessary for the healthy functioning of a relationship. Weak mental and physical health affect the relationship in a negative way. Therefore the skill-based model of romantic competence was developed by Davila et. al in 2009 to promote the healthy functioning of a relationship by avoiding distress. The 3 skill domains of this model are as follows:

1. MUTUALITY: Consideration of mutuality in a relationship which would promote respect for each other. The consequential thinking in any interpersonal situation will help to realize the outcome on both the partners. This would be instrumental in reducing stress.
2. INSIGHT: Making correct emotional decisions to maintain care in a relationship. This skill of adapting and being aware of the consequence of our behavior is learned by experience.
3. EMOTIONAL REGULATION: Regulating the emotions promotes self-worth, awareness of each other's needs, and adaptation for a healthy relationship.
