(Problem 66d) Male house cats are either black or orange; females are black, orange, or calico; these coat-color phenotypes are governed by a sex-linked gene. A certain kind of mating produces progeny in the following proportions: one-fourth orange males, one-fourth orange females, one-fourth black males, and one-fourth calico females. What colors are the parental males and females in this kind of mating?
A.father is black; mother is calico
B.father is black; mother is orange
C.father is orange; mother is orange
D.father is orange; mother is black
E.father is orange; mother is calico |
Answer:
66a).
D. The gene is on the X chromosome and heterozygous females display the calico phenotype.
Explanation:
XRXR = Orange female
XRXr = Caico female
XrXr = black female
XRY = Orange male
XrY = black male

In cats fur colour can be black, orange or tortoise (patched orange and black). A mating between two cats produces the kittens indicated below. P: tortoise female X orange male F1: orange females tortoise females black males orange males What are the genotypes of the parents and F1 progeny, if fur colour is controlled by X-linked alleles?
Coat color in cats is partially determined by the X-linked O locus. OO females and OY males are orange, while oo females and oY males are black. Oo females are a mosaic of orange and black (calico cats). In a population of cats where this locus is at Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, 4% of males are orange. a) What is the frequency of the o (black) allele in the population? ____________ b) What is the expected frequency of calico cats in this population, assuming equal...
In cats with tortoiseshell coat color, the fur is white with patchy black and orange spots. In cats, the tortoiseshell gene is on the X chromosome, and the tortoiseshell phenotype requires the presence of 2 different alleles at this locus: one for orange fur (o) and one for black fur (b). What phenomenon best explains why female cats can inherit tortoiseshell coat color? In females, the alleles for coat color are pleiotropic, resulting in patches of orange and black coat...
5. Hairy pinna (hairy ears) has been found in males, but not in females. Suggest an explanation for this. (use the letter "E") 6. Coat color in cats is a co-dominant trait and is also located on the X chromosome. Cats can be black, yellow or calico. A calico cat has black and yellow splotches. In order to be calico, the cat must have an allele for the black color and an allele for the yellow color. Use a punnet...

How many of the offspring are white eyed, male white eyed, female red eyed, male red eyed, female 6. In humans, hemophilia is a sex linked trait. Females can be normal, carriers, or have the disease. Males will either have the disease or not (but theywon'tever be carriers) XHXH=female, non-hemophilic X H X h female, carrier Xh Xh-...
Question 3 20 pts Genetically, why does a Calico cat have the orange and black patterned patches of fur? The fur pattern is due to activation of a homozygous autosomal chromosome. The fur pattern is due to activation of a heterozygous sex linked chromosome. The fur pattern is due to activation of a homozygous sex linked chromosome. The fur pattern is due to inactivation of a heterozygous sex linked chromosome The fur pattern is due to inactivation of a homozygous...

What are the expected proportions of the different phenotypes resulting from a mating between two pigs heterozygous for both traits? SHOW A PUNNETT SQUARE 4. There are 2 colors in color squash, white & yellow. White (W) is dominant over yellow (w). What are the expected genotype and phenotype frequencies for each of the...
17. In cats, yellow fur is dominant to black fur. The heterozygous tortoise-shell" or "calico" condition is exhibited only by the female. The fur trait is sex-linked. What offspring (genotypes, phenotypes and frequencies) would you expect from the cross of a black male with a yellow female? What kinds of offspring would you expect to result from the cross of a black male with a tortoise-shell female? How about the cross of two tortoise-shell animals?! dong
Genetics I was wondering how female calico cats express both an x chromosome with the orange trait and one x chromosome with the black trait if x inactivation occurs? If one of her x chromosomes is inactivated then wouldn't just that one color be left to be expressed? Also are all labrador retrievers carriers of the "e" chromosome? Does epistasis occur so the gene can't express pigment? Thanks for any help!!
