Answer #1

The Synthesis of aspirin involves the reaction between acetic anhydride and o-hydroxy benzoic acid in presence of strong acid such as phosphoric acid (scheme below). Phosphoric acid is used as a catalyst to activate the acetic anhydride group.

If we are to replace Phosphoric acid with HCl, the reaction will not proceed because conc HCl will be available only as 33 % in water which may react with acetic anhydride forming acetic acid.

The KMnO4Test is used to detect the presence of phenols. Upon reaction completion of o-hydroxybenzoic acid to aspirin, the presence of free phenolic group is testing by adding KMnO4 solution. Disappearance of purple colour indicates the absence of phenolic group.

PRELAB EXERCISE EXPERIMENT 21 Synthesis of Aspirin (Acetylsalicylic Acid) What is the purpose of sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid used in the acetylation reaction? Use equations to explain this purpose. The procedure calls for cautious addition of water to the reaction mixture while it is still hot. What purpose does the addition of water serve and why should the addition be done while the reaction mixture is hot? Provide an equation for the reaction involved.Using the quantities of salicylic acid and acetic anhydride...

please help with how the flow chart will look like? thank you! Synthesis of n-Butyl Bromide Purpose of the Experiment: In this week's experiment you will be synthesizing n-butylbromide (IUPAC 1-bromobutane from 1-butanol and a concentrated acid via a nucleophilie substitution reaction. It is important to know that alcohols dehydrate to form alkenes in the presence of strong inorganic acids, so care must be taken in this experiment not to heat the reaction too vigorously else an elimination reaction may...
