Lesion bypass DNA polymerases that can “read through” things like thymine dimers are much more error-prone than other DNA polymerases? Why do you think this is? What is the benefit of having them if they are mutagenic?

Answer #1

Lesion bypass DNA polymerases are low fidelity enzymes which cause translesional synthesis. That is they replicate damaged DNA and restore the undamaged sequence. They are much error prone because of striking robustness of the replication apparatus to maintain genomic stability , and low fidelity and low processivity.

The mutagenic potential of these enzymes is for regulation of expression, activity and access to undamaged DNA templates.

I have no actual opinion of whether it is genetics or social, but I do believe it is a...
