What did you know about philosophy and what did you think about it when you first studied philosophy? And did your views about philosophy change after? (350 words minimum)
(Answer) According to philosophy, anything that is good can be an idea, a person, a thing, etc. These things can be good if they possess a certain value. The thing or form itself is not the thing that is good but rather the value of its ontological category is that which is good.
For instance, a person that is good would have a good soul. This good soul, in turn, would be good because of its humility, patience, kindness, love, etc. This alludes to the fact that philosophy is the study and analysis of the intrinsic value of beings and ideas.
This is why the observations of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, etc. would deal with the implications of actions rather than the action itself. They would focus on the didactic of the story instead of the characters, settings or other tropes. In the allegory of the cave, the focus is not on the cave, the pictures or the people but, rather on the thought process of the people, what pleases and enlightens them and what stagnates and displeases them.
Before the study of philosophy, one would merely value a person, idea or object based on quantifiable evidence or the utility it posses. Philosophy aims to understand the qualitative value of things which are not judged by its use but rather by the inherent good it may render.
Prior to studying the subject, one would assume that Philosophy would not be a subject with practical and everyday application. However, such a subject can be used in the field of marketing, ethics, hospitality, etc. This is because all of these fields deal with bringing about the satisfaction of human beings by bringing value to their lives through goods and services. Since philosophy is the study of these values, it can be applied to these practical fields as well.
