Consensus means conserved. Consensus sequences are those which are conserved across different organisms. Either they are totally conserved, it means they are absolutely same in different organisms or they are almost conserved, it means they are slightly different in different organisms.
A conserved sequence can be either present on a protein in the form of conserved Amino acid sequence or can be present on DNA in the form of conserved nucleotides sequence.
A scientist always find out different locations where a particular consensus sequence is found so as to determine the origin of that gene or protein. A gene or protein may either arise due to duplication or due to speciation. Both of these events give rise to genes/proteins having conserved sequences. Determination of conserved sequences also help to track the evolutionary relationship between various organisms.
To summarise consensus sequences are important in determining the origin of gene or protein and to track evolutionary relationships.
