The pharyngeal muscles that derived from the first pharyngeal (mandibular) arch include muscles of mastication, anterior belly of digastric, mylohyoid, tensor tympani, tensor veli palatinae.

The pharyngeal muscles that derived from the second (hyoid) arch include muscles of facial expression, stylohyoid muscle, and stapedius muscle of the middle ear.
