Load Balancing : Load balancing is a technique used to distribute workloads uniformly across servers or other compute resources to optimize network efficiency, reliability and capacity. Load balancing is performed by an appliance -- either physical or virtual -- that identifies in real time which server in a pool can best meet a given client request, while ensuring heavy network traffic doesn't unduly overwhelm a single server.

In addition to maximizing network capacity and performance, load balancing provides failover. If one server fails, a load balancer immediately redirects its workloads to a backup server, thus mitigating the impact on end users.

I work for HCL and here we are working on a web project similar to Amazon : Load Balancing is very critical part of our project because in web field we cannot cater failovers even for seconds it can create a huge impact in profit is server gets down for certain time. Load balancing technique is used by us in the following way:

1:Heavy Loads: when server is getting high hits then load balancer automatically increase one instance of the application so that particular instance does not get populated with hits.

2:Low Loads: when server is getting low hits then load balancer automatically decrease one instance of the application.

3:server crash: when one instance of allocation gets crash then the hits start redirecting towards other instances cater by load balancer and at backend new instance gets created and that replace previous one.

Yes load balance can be use in High availability which means it make sure that application always available to the end user.

Load balancer is used in most scenarios where application has many instances and we want to distribute all the load among these instances so that user gets faster responses and lesser app crashes.
