Flame test:

Flame tests are useful because gas excitations produce line emission spectrum for an element.

When atoms of gas/vapour are excited,their electrons are able to move from ground state to higher

energy states.As they return to ground states,they emit photon of very specific energy.Their energy

corresponds to specific wavelength and hence produces particular color.Each element has its own

definite line emmision spectrum, for example: copper produces blue flame .

Fe produces golden color flame and Mg produces intense white flame .Nitric salts produces

red color flame . One can identify the element by color of flame they produce .
