Glycosylation is a posttranslational modification that involves enzymatic addition of carbohydrate in the defined portion of the protein whereas glycation is the random event occurring in the blood. Glycation is caused by the attachment of ends of free sugars (glucose, fructose, galactose) covalently attach to proteins. For example, glycated haemoglobin in diabetic people is a hallmark of diabetes disease.

Similarity- in both the events carbohydrates are attached to the proteins.

Difference- Glycosylation is the controlled event and is beneficial for the working of many proteins and glycation is not a controlled event and usually is harmful.
