Production of human growth hormone in the milk of livestock involves the genetic engineering approach of cloning the gene responsible for the production of growth hormone (if it is a single gene) or cloning of all the genes involved in the pathway for synthesis of human growth hormone. The cloning can be done at the embryonic stage so that the probability for gene incorporation and activation will be high.

Compared with the production of proteins using bacteria, it might be more advantageous as the production of growth hormones require post-translation modification. Hence, a eukaryotic system is advantageous over a prokaryotic system as the proteins produced by prokaryotes lack post-translational modification. Moreover, if cloning of more than one gene is required then a prokaryotic system might not be able to handle the large size of a gene.
