This is an example of lateral inhibition.  lateral inhibition is the capacity of an excited neuron to reduce the activity of its neighboring neuron. Lateral inhibition disables the spreading of action potentials from excited neurons to neighboring neurons in the lateral direction.

Many times a camera flash goes off right in our eyes, we see the bright spot after the flash has gone this is because within the cornea, the transparent tissue through which light first enters the eye.
