How would you classify the MIS departments of
comparative companies? Do these classifications have a
significant meaning or impact that is relevant to company
performance? How and why?
Based on your experience, how do organizational
structure and strategy relate to MIS needs?
MIS is considered to be a great asset for all businesses & corporations around the world. If we move into a highly technological society, it is very much important to implement MIS into the business operations so that it can help in the growth & survival of the company. I would consider that any operating system has competency & someone who tries to do one another for instance IOS vs. Android, Apple vs. Microsoft & so on. But the basis of MIS is typically the same for all systems as the era of MIS started only just before 1965.
But whether or not these classifications have meaning or impact majorly depends on the corporation & the purpose for which MIS is used. For example, an MIS of an insurance company will not be the same as an MIS of a hospital.
Organization structure & MIS:
MIS is described as a pyramidal structure that has four levels of information resources. The level of information depends on the structure of the organization.
The top level deals with strategic planning & policy making at the highest level of management. The second d level is information resources that aid tactical planning & decision making for management control. The third level deals with day to day operations & control. And the bottom level deals with transaction processing. Since the decision making is specific to hierarchical levels the information requirements at each level would vary.
Thus, MIS as a support system draws upon:
· Concepts of organization;
· Organizational theories, principles, structure, behaviour and processes such as communication, power and decision making; and
· Motivation and leadership behaviour.
