The face of healthcare is constantly changing as the providers find more ways of practicing medicine with advancements in technology, like telemedicine/telehealth. Similarly the HIM functions are becoming virtual/remote, such as medical transcriptions, medical billing, etc. Discuss TWO technologies that could be used for virtual HIM functions as well as their advantages and disadvantages.
Your initial post comprising a minimum of 250 words should contain at least 2–3 credible/peer-reviewed references. Please use one thats not posted because i submitted this question yesterday and it was answered but my classmate had already used it.
Back Ground
HIM(Health Information Management) department functions can be performed remotely as follows:
the department functions are completely automated by an modern information system
there is no need to access physical object within the HIM department, it eliminates the paper work.
if HIM is using networking technologies like Internet, VPN(Virtual Private Network) for communication.
Two Technologies
1)Digital Signature Technology
2)Automated Speech Recognition Technology
1)Digital Signature Technology:-this technology is used to sign the documents digitally.
it is used to implement non repudiation. this technology is base on cryptography(public key and private key)
doctor should digitally sign his/her prescription, once doctor signed his/her prescription, now doctor can not
deny his/her prescription.
similarly, all the medical reports of patient like blood reports and other reports shold be signed using digital signature.
Advantage:
is can be used to implement non repudiation, means no one can deny for his/her communication.
disadvantage:
if a cyber criminal(cryptanalyst) forges someone's digital signature.
now digital signatures can be misused to create big problems.
2)Automated Speech Recognition Technology
speech recognition technology allows a computer to take spoken words as an input and computer compares their(word's) sounds to a database of word pronunciations and then delivering the matching word on the screen.
in the beginning, this technology was not so accurate , but now a days Speech Recognition Technology has achieved 99 percent accuracy. the very common example of Speech Recognition Technology is that , we can search any topic on Xoogle by speaking a word or topic.
There are two types of ASR technologies.
a) An orders-based speech recognition technology system is used by radiology, pathology departments where ordered test results are dictated.
b) An encounters-based speech recognition technology system is used by HIM departments where the information is dictated.
advantages
a)now a days it is not a costly technology for example Xoogle provides speech recognition based searching on Xoogle.
b)the front-end clinician editing deployment eliminates transcription turn-around times.
disadvantage
a)software need training ,it may be a time consuming process.
b)different accents may produce some issues.
