It is common for a company to have a Code of Ethics. Describe four functions of a Code of Ethics. What other aspects of the employment relationship (between employee and employer) should align and be consistent with a company’s Code of Ethics? Describe how they should align. Four functions of a Code of Ethics can be described as given below :-

1. Emphasis on values and beliefs of the company - code of ethics clarifies the beliefs and values of the company to be practiced by employees in dealing with customers and clients. It advises them on the ethics to be followed at work.

2. Conduct to be followed for dealing with colleagues, teams, subordinates and seniors in the company - It is important to advise employees on issues like diversity and treat everyone fairly at work. The work environment needs to follow certain rules and conduct of behaviour to maintain discipline and order at workplace.

3. Compliance to be followed as applicable to the industry - The industries like healthcare and finances need to comply with audits and sharing of information regarding their functions that needs to be advised as per the company policy to its employees.

4. Guidelines to address any conflicts at work - The conflicts between different groups or teams at work can be solved with help of code of ethics so that it is done as per proper process and policies of the organisation.

Other aspects of the employment relationship ( between employer and employee) that needs to align and be consistent with code of ethics are the work place rules. It includes interpersonal dealing and communication with team members, seniors, customers and suppliers. The employees need to follow values like integrity, honesty, transparency, empathise and equality at work without discrimination and harassment.

They can be aligned with sharing code of ethics with the employees and reinforcing the information through various channels of communication informally and formally. The company website, notice boards, emails and meetings can help the employees to understand the code of ethics and ways to practice it at work with proper support and training.

Companies enforce their code of ethics in their interactions with employees and highlight them in important cases. The code of ethics is practised in dealing with customers and suppliers so that there are no conflicts and compliance is done with important regulations and laws.
