  1. Come up with an example of a bivariate correlation. It can be the relationship between any 2 numeric variables.
  2. Using your example, explain the directionality problem.
  3. Come up with a third variable that could likely explain the changes in both of your variables (i.e. identify the potential third-variable problem).
  4. Using your example, explain why you can’t determine causality in your (hypothetical) study.

ANSWER:

Consider the variables-poverty and education, where, education is determined as the number of students enrolled for college. The directionality of the correlation is negative, that is rising level of poverty over the years, was followed by decline in number of people enrolled for college.

Now, a third variable is unemployment rate. To establish causality, for the given variables, the level of education and poverty has to be related irrespective of the unemployment rate. If the third variable does not affect the bivariate relationship, it can be concluded that poverty causes low education. But satisfying this criterion requires multivariate analysis and for which partial correlation coefficient has to be computed for poverty (Y) and level of education (X), while controlling unemploment rate (Z). The more the bivariate relationship retains its strength over series of control, the stronger the evidence for direct relationship between X and Y.

Correlation This assignment will examine your ability to analyze the relationship between two variables, create an equation for predicting one variable from the other, and to critique the results of the data. You will be given the data for 2 psychological experiments looking at the relationship between variables. For these sets of data you will: (1) use the SPSS program to calculate the correlation and create a scatterplot (2) provide the appropriate output given from the program (3) describe this...

D ULIWPIHOOLDA2bqui4403T%2f%2fiviJC When the relationship between two or more independent variables needs to be tested, a common tool to use is a regression analysis. Take for example a study that shows the relationship between gaming and teen violence; or a study that shows a correlation between fast food eating habits and obesity. • Describe 2 - 3 combinations of independent and dependent variables that you could test using a regression analysis. What types of results could the regression analysis yield?...

Give an example of variables that have correlation but no causation exists? [1 sentence or a graph] You may NOT use the ice cream/crime example AND you may not copy information verbatim from websites. You may look at https://stats.stackexchange.com/questions/36/examples-for-teaching-correlation-does-not-mean-causation for examples but you need to (at a minimum) put what you find in your own words and explain what the true cause of the relationship is. In the ice cream/crime example it was found that in a particular city that...

In this assignment, your task is to come up with potential operational definitions for the words in bold and underlined. An operational definition is a definition that makes it clear how the researcher should go about measuring the process, activity, or thing. The operational definition should also allow other researchers to duplicate-replicate the study because the variables are so clearly defined. For example if I wanted to know if exercise increased energy I would define “exercise” as something like “walking...

B) Second, if the study is correlational, what are the two variables being measured? Alternatively, if the study is experimental, what are the independent and dependent **Your answer to question B depends on how you answered question A*** 3) Are people more likely to comply with a strange request than a...

A researcher is interested in the relationship between students’ participation in tutorials and academic achievement. She states the following hypothesis in the description of her study: Students who participate in tutorials that emphasise critical thinking skills will score higher on measures od academic achievement and self-esteem than students who participate tutorials that emphasise rote memorisation. Identify the variables in this study. What would be good names for the variables? Identify the independent variable(s) and dependent variable(s). Describe how each variable...
