Social work is defined as the work which is socially done for the betterment and welfare of human beings. Social work can be of two types i.e

  • Voluntary social work
  • Professional social work

Voluntary social work : Voluntary social work is the social work where people from community who wishes to help the people by guiding, helping, sloving problem without being professionally accqiring skills and techniques of social worker ,the work is employed such social work is known as voluntary social work.

After the world War II the whole India was destroyed and damaged economically, financially. Various health issues such as severe famines, diseases were caused a huge damage to the lives of people. At such situation people of India need a helping hand to pass through the situation of that time. For this people from them who are strong and in a state of helping other emerge as a voluntary social worker and started social work voluntarily.

At the other part when India was under British rule, princily states at that time used to levied a huge tax on farmers which are they failed to pay and in cusation they have to give their whole land to zamindars. Here also some promoninent social worker of that that raised the issue and helped the people to overcome.

Professional social work : Professional social work is defined as the social work, where the social worker is professionally trained and equipped with social worker skills, techniques and methods. A professional social worker is the one who had completed a bachelor degree according to social work curriculum syllabus set by the University.

Firstly in the year 1936, "Sir Dorabji Graduate school of Social work foumded and later in the year 1944 it was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social work, mumbai.

Likewise social work has a two broad definition, functions and different procedure to employ in doing social work. Social work consist of many steps which has to be employ while solving case such as :

  • Meeting
  • Counselling
  • Nature of problem
  • Observation : Internal and External observation
  • Evaluation
  • Data collection : survey - formal and Informal
  • Future planning
  • Diagnosis
  • Treatment plan
  • Rehabilitation
  • Followup

These are the basic steps which have to applied to cases while doing social work.
