Answer #1

Organizational structure is the key for information flow in an organization within all the levels.

The achieve the goal of an organization, a certain system needs to be in place in the organization to define rules, roles, responsibilities, task allocation and to perform coordination, supervision between the employees in all the levels . It determines how information flows between all the levels in the organization, whether it’s Top –Down or a Flat structure, whether its Functional or Product based, or Matrix or Network structure etc.

An organizational structure is a visual diagram of a company that describes what employee’s do, whom they report to, and how decisions are made across the business. In simple words it explains how your company works and how its roles are organized.

Below are certain elements of an organizational structure:

  1. Chain of command : Chain of command is how tasks are delegated and work is approved within the organization. In layman’s words, who tells whom to do what? And how are issues, requests, and proposals communicated up and down the ladder?
  2. Span of Control : It can represent Who falls under management and which tasks falls under a departments responsibility.

There are four specific standards and practices to govern every decision the business makes. They are :

  1. Functional organizational Structure : The functional structure departmentalizes an organization based on common job functions e.g. If a Company has three functional fields such as Marketing, Sales, Services it will group all of the marketers together in one department, group all of the salespeople together in a separate department, and group all of the customer service people together in a third department.
  2. Product Based Divisional Structure : In this case each division within the organization is dedicated to a particular product line. It comprised of multiple, smaller functional structures (i.e. each division within a divisional structure can have its own marketing team, its own sales team, and so on).
  3. Flat Structure : The flat structure limits the levels of management so all staff are only a few steps away from leadership. It also might not always take the form or a pyramid, or any shape for that matter.
  4. Matrix Structure : A matrix organizational structure doesn't follow the traditional, hierarchical model. Instead, all employees have dual reporting relationships one of which is direct reporting and the other is secondary.

Now lets look at the organization structure of Lenovo :

  • Lenovo is a Chinese technology company that designs, manufactures, and sells personal computers, tablets, smart phones, smart televisions, workstations, and servers.
  • Lenovo is the world's largest PC vendor, claiming a 24.7% market share for the third quarter of 2019, well ahead of HP Inc., Dell, and Apple.
  • Lenovo has impressive competitive advantages over its rivals in the PC marketplace, including its large distribution network and its ability to expand its presence in emerging markets.
  • Over the years, Lenovo has used strategic acquisitions and partnerships to access new markets and increase sales.
  • Lenovo lags in market share behind its rivals in both tablet and smartphone sales

Below is the visual diagram of Lenovo's organizational structure:

We can see above that Lenovo follows a Centralized or Top-down organizational structure where there is defined chain of command presents. It follows specific standards and practices to govern every decision the business makes.

In the above diagram of Lenovo’s organizational structure we can clearly see that Lenovo follows the functional organizational structure. They have separate divisions for all of the different functions such as Enterprise System, Server System Marketing , System Development Marketing, EBG Finance, Storage system etc. Each of those functional divisions has their respective Vice Presidents who directly reports to CEO of the Company. Each VP has sub divisions (E.g. Enterprise system has four sub divisions Sales, HR, Legal, Finance) where they have directors reporting to their VP's, the directors have some managers under them who reports to them, the managers have executives working under them and likewise the hierarchy(top-down) pyramid forms.
