When we talk about planning and design, how far into the future should we be looking? Immediate? Next month? Years? Does it depend on what specifically we are designing?

Planning & design can be divided into three broad terms:
Operational Planning, Tactical Planning & Strategic Planning. Operational Planning is the planning of all day to day operations of the plant. Tactical Planning is all about planning for the mid-term horizon. it involves production planning, Material scheduling and resource planning. The time horizon for this tactical planning is about 3 months to 6 months.Strategic planning is about taking a strategic decision which is taken keeping in mind the long term standing of the company. This planning is all about expansion, capacity building etc. The time horizon for this type of planning is basically more than 5 years.
