1. Describe the regulation of fatty acid oxidation and to relate this to cellular needs. Describe the role of malonyl–CoA in the regulation of fatty acid oxidation.

For the above question

Fatty acid oxidation means mostly beta oxidation of fatty acid which means oxidation and splitting of two carbon units(acetyl CoA) occur at the beta chain of fatty acid.

So Regulation of Fatty acid Oxidation includes.

a) Availability of Free fatty acid because if no fatty acid is available then fatty acid oxidation is not possible.

b) Glucagon : insulin ration also important because, glucagone increase the Free fattu acid level while insulin decrease the free fatty acid level in cells.

c) Malonyl CoA - it inhibited the Carnitine acyl transferase 1(CAT-1) as a result the free fatty acid will not able to transport inside the mitochondria where oxidation of fatty acids occur. This inhibition is allosteric inhibition, it mainly occur during hyperglycemia where synthesis of fatty acid occurs (De novo synthesis) where malonyl CoA is key enzyme for the fatty acid synthesis and also it stops oxidation of fatty acid.
