Organic Chemistry is, in essence, the study of carbon compounds, their derivatives and their role in what we experience as life. Life is conformed of and surrounded by chemical reactions of all sorts, which are essential as steps in the many cycles that make us be alive.

Organic Chemistry relates to all compounds and reactions which involve the elements we know as C, H, O, N, P and S. To these, other elements can be added and the assortment of compounds we can obtain is enormous. Carbon chains are the base but the possibilities are endless, for a simple change or added atom can make the variability of a compound extremely notorious.

Given that organic chemistry is so involved in the processes and basic elements of life, its importance in nowadays lifestyle is still quite big. Even with all the scientific breakthroughs we've already experienced with the help of organic chemistry, there are still lots of things to discover and to improve with the use of this particular area of science. Some examples are discussed below:

- Medicine: Organic Chemistry has a main application in medicine, given that the drugs that are designed to cure diseases are organic chemistry-based completely. Drug delivery is also important and concerning organic chemistry, given its natural relationship to biochemistry in itself. It is important to know the form, the conformation, the structure and the radicals in an organic compound that is meant to act as a drug for a living organism, so that it works correctly.

- Food: This is also a huge area in which organic chemistry is involved. From the very analysis of food, we have organic molecules forming said food and giving it certain nutrients and/or having certain macromolecules that make them more or less nutritive or necessary for our consumption. The addition of vitamins, creation of alimentary supplements and even the implementation of new ways of storing and maintaining food involves the knowledge and research on organic chemistry.

- Cleansing and sterilizing: the liquids you use to clean, such as soaps, disinfectants and sterilizing agents are also based on organic compounds. Their strength and use are determined by the compounds you may use to make them.

- Textiles: The production of cloth also involves organic chemistry and compounds, since they are organic materials such as cotton, wool, poylester, etc. The durability, strength, texture and form are determined by the organic chemistry in them. Even the colors we see in clothes are determined by organic compounds which we know as dyes.

- Fuel: As we know, petroleum is still a very important source of fuel, which involves a lot of organic chemistry not only to know the nature of the compounds that form gas we are using, for example, but also to know the way to extract and work it so as to get the wanted result.

These applications are simply examples of some of the many ways there are in which we can still (and have to) use organic chemistry. The knowledge of this science and the correct handling of the materials and compounds that surround us allow us to improve the way we live and to keep obtaining new ways in which we solve day-to-day issues. It can also be the key to science or medicine breakthroughs, which will improve our way of living and give us all a higher quality in our health, our food consumption and life overall.
