You recently joined a biochemistry research lab to study protein functions in diseases. In the lab, researchers have been working on a protein kinase, the enzyme that catalyzes the phosphoryl transfer reaction from ATP to the -OH group on serine or threonine residues of the target proteins. The researchers in the lab have found that a point mutation in the gene encoding the protein kinase leads to a change in one amino acid of the enzyme, which causes an increase...

Python lab: Problem Statement: In this lab, you will be building a software application that will print the most popular ice-cream flavor among kids. Lab Scenario: 1. You are given an input file flavors.txt. One sample example of the file is given below. 2. You will design a user-defined function most_favorite_flavor() which will return the name of the popular flavor. 3. The main function is responsible reading from the file and calling the most_favorite_flavor() function. 4. For this lab, you...

Draw (or arrange) only the items you need from the Lab Materials Page (picture below) in the order you would use them to make AND screen a gene library. You will ‘draw’ the steps that use the Lab Materials in the correct order to create and screen a gene library which has the assigned gene clone. You will need to add some connecting words and phrases to make all the steps for making your library clear. The genomic gene clone...

You are a graduate student in the lab of a famous fly geneticist. You need to analyze a batch of mutant flies that were recently created in her laboratory to identify the single gene that is most likely mutated in each of the flies. Drag the mutations on the left to the appropriate blanks on the right to complete the sentences. Lab Questions at End (picture 3) QUESTIONS This week in lab you will learn an important technique that microbiologists use to isolate one bacterial species from the population of other microbes it was living with in the natural environment. In most environments there are mixed populations of bacteria. For instance, 600 different types of bacteria have been isolated and identified in the mouths of humans. In soil or water there are also many types of bacteria present. In order to...

You are a summer intern in a clinical hematology lab. The lab director gives you a sample of a patient’s blood proteins and asks you to characterize the thrombin in the sample. She also tells you that thrombin is a serine protease important in blood clotting (see Table 5.3), and this patient is a newborn with uncontrolled bleeding. To characterize the thrombin in the sample, you must remove two proteins that interfere with the thrombin activity assay: cytochrome c and...

One of the important theoretical concepts in population genetics is that of genetic equilibrium, which the Aarge, randomly mating population, allele frequencies do not change from generation to generation frequencies in a population are to remain unchanged, all of the following teria must be met the population must be Irge, there must be no mutation or gone flow, masing must be randon, and there must be no natural selection El Is a consequence of swarty...

You perform an experiment in which you add a synthetic mRNA to a test tube that contains all components required for translation (it was just lacking the mRNA). You find that a polypeptide consisting of 122 amino acids is produced. Then you perform another experiment, this time adding the mRNA from a mutant version of the gene and find that a polypeptide consisting of 48 amino acids was produced. What is a likely explanation for this observation? A. The mutant...

A Lab has isolated a gene, CFE1, that encodes an enzyme (Cfe1) that completes one step of the conversion of caffeine into adenine. to check if CFE1 might be the gene that is mutated in one of the mutants discovered in the original screen. cross each one of the mutants with a strain that has the CFE1 gene fully deleted (cfe14). allow the resulting diploid strain to go through meiosis and produce haploid gametes (“spores") to individually check for the...
