    A cell that contains 22% solute is in a beaker that contains 22% solvent. Which of the following is correct?

o The cell is hypotonic to the solution in the beaker

o The cell is hypertonic to the cell in the beaker

o The cell is isotonic to the solution in the beaker

The correct one is the first one according to my professor. I am confused on why it is. Do we ignore the water in the cell and compare the solute going to the beakers water?

If a cell contains 22% solute its mean it contains 78% of solvent means major portion of the cell is occupied by the solvent. On the other hand beaker contains only 22% solvent its mean 78% is solute. Since solute concentration is much high very less amount of free solvent is available while the situation is opposite in cell.

So solute concentration in beaker is much higher than solute concentration in cells. Now if cells is placed in beaker then the water (solvent) that is in higher amount in cells will start moving into the beaker. This is because cell is hypotonic to the beaker.

So option 1 is correct.
