How does particulate inheritance help maintain variation despite ongoing selection?
According to the concept of particulate inheritance, alleles of parents are passed to next generation in a discrete manner and do not blend to create a new allele. The discrete nature of alleles means that during gamete formation, the alleles inherited from mother and the father will segregate as per the Mendel's law of segregation and will be assorted independently in the gametes. This means that each gamete will have a random combination of alleles from the mother and father. This random distribution of alleles helps in maintaining the variation in the population and is the reason why no two individuals of a same species are exactly identical with the exception of identical twins. In contrast, blending inheritance model suggests that alleles of parents blend together to create new alleles in the offspring which is inherited by the next generation. Since, there is no random rearrangement or segregation of alleles, over the time variation gets washed out of the population.
