You are building a genetic map for pepper fruit color. In your mapping population, change in fruit color is associated with five linked genetic markers or loci: A, B, C, D, and E. Now you want to determine how large (cM) your candidate region for fruit color. You perform a series of testcrosses between red fruit (AA BB CC DD EE) and yellow fruit (aa bb cc dd ee). The following information is obtained:

  • Loci A and B recombine with a and b in 8% of the offspring
  • Loci C and E recombine with c and e in 8% of the offspring
  • Loci C and B recombine with c and b in 5% of the offspring
  • Loci A and C recombine with a and c in 3% of the offspring
  • Loci B and D recombine with b and d in 10% of the offspring
  • Loci E and D recombine with e and d in 7% of the offspring
  • Loci A and E recombine with a and e in 11% of the offspring

Draw a map showing the relative locations of these five loci and the genetic distances (cM units) between them.

You conduct a QTL experiment to find the loci controlling fruit size and sugar content starting from two parental varieties, “Sam’s Giant (SG)” and “Sweet Baby Red (SBR)”. Your cross “Sam’s Giant” and “Sweet Baby Red” and generate F1’s and then interbreed F1’s to generate a series of F2 individuals and measure size and sugar content in all of them. You determine the genotype at many individual SNP markers, 5 of which (each on a different chromosome) are shown below....

Pre-lecture lesson 2.12: Linkage and Gene Mapping You are charged with testing whether 2 different genes are independently assorting during meiosis in Drosophila melanogaster, the fruit fly The 2 genes you will be observing for this experiment are: Black: a recessive allele of this gene (b) results in a dark body color (somewhat similar to ebony, but a richer dark coloration that is less ashen-colored). The dominant allele for this gone (B) produces wild type body color Vestigial: a recessive...
